  1. Puce First of all, do you have an individual and/or collective approach ?

We have a collective approach

  1. Puce How many children have today integrated the patient education programme in your department ?

4 children today

  1. Puce How many participants are there in the collective workshops and who are they (children, parents, other adults…) ?

In the collective workshop there are adults, parents of children with AD but also all people interested.

  1. Puce Who is the educational staff for this programme (doctors, nurses, psychologists...) ?

The staff is composed of an allergologist, a psychologist and a dermatologist that present the program of atopic school, interacting with parents of children with AD.

  1. Puce How many members of staff participate in this programme and what training, if any, do they receive ?

All the members of our staff participate in this programme

  1. Puce What are the principal aims of these workshops ?

All members work together, coordinated by a psychologist

  1. Puce Do you use educational support tools and if so can you describe them ?

We used brochures, gadgets and also slides, educational films.

  1. Puce Do private dermatologists participate in the Atopic school ?

In the Atopic school there are dermatologists that work mainly in hospital.

  1. Puce How is the link established between the Atopic school and the dermatologists and paediatricians in private practice ?

They are aware of the school of atopy, but there is currently no practical cooperation.

  1. Puce How are the sessions organised ?

Generally, a psychologist conducts the interview in collaboration with other figure such as an allergist and a dermatologist.

The first meeting takes about 3 hours

During the initial meeting we explain what the atopic school is, atopic dermatitis and the possible link with food allergy, the impact of AD on the quality of life of children and their families and psychological aspects. 

We distribute a questionnaire for parents about AD, the severity of eczema, and therapies to explore their doubts about these aspects.

After the first meeting, we program at least 2 more meetings where an allergist and a dermatologist treat medical aspects and a psychologist treat psychological aspects

  1. Puce Do you have contact with other patient education teams, particularly those teams working with Asthma or Food Allergies ?

Yes, the allergist of our atopic school is a member of the staff working with asthma and food allergies.


  1. Puce What role, if any, do parent associations/patient support groups, play in the Atopic schools ?

Currently parent association have no role in our atopic school.

  1. Puce What role, if any, do schools play in managing chronic skin disease ?

Unfortunately there is little information and often teachers are not trained on this topic.

  1. Puce Besides Atopic schools, is patient education developed for other pathologies in your country, and if yes, which pathologies are concerned ?

In our country is starting patient education about allergies and the use of adrenaline.

  1. Puce Do you have official patient education recommendations/guidelines in your country ?

No we don’t have any.

  1. Puce How many active education departments exist today in your country ?

Currently, there are 4 atopic schools in Italy (Bologna, Milano, Genova, Palermo).

  1. Puce Are there particular organisations to train the staff in patient education? If not, where is the staff trained ?

There are no particular organisations, the staff is composed by expert people that every day work with atopic children.

  1. Puce How much do you invoice the whole education course ?

The whole educational course is free for participant and staff members are unpaid, we are waiting for funds.

  1. Puce How much is the patient reimbursed by the health authorities ?

Patients are not reimbursed because the programme educational is free of charge.
